SUMMARY:November 2026 Concert
DESCRIPTION:Eccentric English composer\, Ethel Smyth\, wrote her opera The Wreckers after a visit to the Isles of Scilly.  It is a tale of love\, violence and betrayal and the overture depicts the sea in all its moods as a metaphor for the powerful emotions portrayed. \nWe are delighted to welcome Charlie Lovell-Jones as soloist in Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto.  It was written in 1939\, while the composer was in the USA and combines virtuostic brilliance with elegiac lyricism.  The mournful character reflects Britten’s sense of looming catastrophe\, as the world spiralled into war. \nElgar’s Symphony No. 2 was dedicated to the memory of Edward VII\, but the brilliant orchestral writing expresses much more personal emotions\, both joy and sadness.  Like the composer himself\, it is full of contradictions and complexities\, referencing Shelley’s poem ‘Rarely\, rarely comest thou/Spirit of Delight’. \nWelsh violinist Charlie Lovell-Jones has been recognised as one of the most promising international soloists of his generation. Since his sold-out Royal Festival Hall debut aged fifteen\, Charlie has appeared as soloist with orchestras across the UK and beyond\, including the Sinfonia of London\, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra\, BBC Concert Orchestra\, BBC National Orchestra of Wales\, English Chamber Orchestra\, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra\, Yamagata Symphony Orchestra\, Noord Nederlands Orkest\, Sinfonietta Cracovia\, and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Charlie has appeared live on radio in broadcasts of Waxman Carmen Fantasy (RTÉ Radio)\, Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending (BBC Radio 3)\, Karl Jenkins Violin Concerto (BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Wales) and his own composition\, Cariad Cyntaf (2017)\, for which he was joined by soprano Rebecca Evans (BBC Radio Wales). He has worked with conductors such as John Wilson\, Rumon Gamba\, Delyana Lazarova\, Edward Gardner\, Sir Mark Elder\, Ken Takaseki\, Michael Seal\, Lee Reynolds\, Moritz Gnann\, Ben Gernon\, Grant Llewellyn\, Stephen Bell\, and Jonathan Mann. Charlie is also a Beare’s International Violin Society Artist. \nCharlie is in demand as both a soloist and recitalist. His 2024–25 season featured performances of concertos by Sibelius\, Gipps\, Britten\, Brahms\, Bach\, Bruch and Vivaldi\, a duo recital with pianist Ariel Lanyi at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern\, and quartet concerts with the award-winning Barbican Quartet at the Lake District Music Festival. He debuted as soloist at the Snape Maltings in 2021\, Wigmore Hall in 2022\, Birmingham Symphony Hall and De Oosterpoort in 2023\, the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Krakow Philharmonic in 2024\, and in 2026 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and\, as the opening concert of Classical Pride\, Kings Place London. \nCharlie plays a 1777 G.B. Guadagnini violin on loan from a generous benefactor. SUMMARY:March 2027 Concert
DESCRIPTION:Given the title ‘Choral Symphony’ by Rachmaninov\, The Bells is a setting of a Russian translation of a poem by Edgar Allan Poe.  Bell sounds held a lifelong intense spiritual and cultural significance for Rachmaninov\, along with his other obsession\, liturgical chanting – in particular\, the Dies Irae. Here\, the four movements follow the course of life from birth to death\, the bells being associated with a sleigh ride\, a wedding\, alarm calls and a funeral. \nFrom its premiere\, Rachmaninov’s 2nd Symphony was\, and remains\, a triumphant and popular success.  Full of glorious melodies and colourful orchestration\, the mood ranges from savage and terrifying to romantic and sensual. Bells again feature in the jubilant ending. \nBath Bach Choir is a spirited group of some 90 musicians which gave its first performance in 1947 and continues to be a thriving and friendly group. \nFor some 33 years\, the choir benefited from the inspirational and passionate style of Nigel Perrin\, our much-loved Musical Director whose death in June 2024 we were very sad to announce. From January 2023 we welcomed Benedict Collins Rice who is proving to be outstanding in the role as he leads the choir into a new and exciting chapter of its history. \nThe Choir’s performances embrace a broad repertoire from Bach\, Handel and Tchaikovsky to Macmillan\, Todd and Pehkonen\, the latter three all present to hear their works performed. Members frequently travel together to sing in foreign venues (including Bath’s twin cities)\, run an annual workshop and enjoy focused\, fun rehearsals as well as social gatherings. \nMusical Director Benedict Collins Rice\nAccompanist Marcus Sealy \nWe are delighted to welcome our three soloists for this concert\, soprano Siân Dicker\, tenor Paul Curievici\, and bass-baritone Paul Carey Jones. \n \n‘Oozing characterful expression’ with ‘ample tones\, gorgeously rich in the middle’ (Opera Today)\, soprano Siân Dicker is in demand for her rich\, full-bodied voice and dramatic flair. A regular on the competition platform\, Siân won first prize at the inaugural Hurn Court Opera singing competition. She went on to win the Singers Prize in the 2020 Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition as well as the Oxford International Song Festival Young Artist Platform. Siân is a City Music Foundation Artist\, a 2021/22 Britten Pears Young Artist and was listed in BBC Music Magazine’s ‘Rising Stars’ feature in February 2023. SUMMARY:June 2027 Concert
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Henrietta Cooke as our soloist in the enchanting Martinů Oboe Concerto.  Written in 1955\, it brings together a wide variety of influences\, from Czech folk music to neo-classical Stravinsky with some jazzy syncopations also in the mix.  Accompanied by a small orchestra including a piano\, the solo line alternates passages of virtuostic brilliance with moments of lyrical tenderness. \nIt was with his 6th Symphony that Dvořák first achieved international recognition and it is not hard to see why.  A stream of captivating melodies flows through all four movements\, ranging from the expressive and elegant to energetic Bohemian dance rhythms\, such as the fiery Furiant. \nWe open our Czech programme with Smetana’s ever-popular and much-loved tone poem Vltava\, which follows the course of the river through the countryside to the city of Prague. \nHenrietta grew up in Watford and started learning the oboe at the age of 11\, playing in many youth ensembles run by the Hertfordshire County Music Service. She studied her undergraduate degree in Music at the University of Southampton (2015-2018)\, and after that she went to the Royal College of Music for her Master’s degree and Artist Diploma (2018-2021). Her teachers were Olivier Stankiewicz\, Fabien Thouand\, John Anderson\, Juliana Koch and Christine Pendrill. After leaving the RCM in 2021\, Henrietta embarked on a busy freelance career\, playing second oboe and cor anglais with orchestras including the LSO\, RPO\, BBCNOW\, BBCSO\, BBCPO\, Ulster Orchestra\, ROH Orchestra and the Philharmonia. Henrietta was recently appointed as the Sub-Principal Oboe of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, and is looking forward to touring all around the world with her talented colleagues.
